Setting up Canadian direct debits

Last updated: May 8, 2026

Overview

Canadian SWIFT codes have a format different from those of other countries, which could cause some confusion when adding your payment method.

Instructions

For Canada, the routing number must be 9 digits in this format: 0-XXX-XXXXX

  • Starts with 0

  • XXX is the 3-digit institution code

  • XXXXX is the 5-digit branch code

If the routing number does not match the expected format, SWIFT/BIC validation can fail and block form submission

Re-check all bank details against an authoritative source

  • Compare against your bank statement

  • If unsure, contact your bank and ask them to confirm the correct routing number format

Pro tip: If you don’t know your bank account branch, Wise provides a list of major banks in Canada and their respective codes.
